Rhinoplasty (or nose job) is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in Ukraine. This surgical procedure allows you to change the shape and size of the nose, improve its functionality, and achieve the desired aesthetic harmony of the face. However, the initial surgery does not always give the desired result, and the patient may need a repeat rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is divided into two main categories:
1. Cosmetic rhinoplasty — changes the appearance of the nose to achieve aesthetic goals.
2. Functional rhinoplasty — improves breathing or solves other medical problems related to the nose, such as a deviated septum.
Plastic surgery may include reducing or enlarging certain areas of the nose, correcting the septum (septoplasty), or correcting congenital or traumatic defects.
The main reasons for repeat rhinoplasty
1. Patient dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result.
Even with the best planning and execution of plastic surgery, the patient may be dissatisfied with the final result. This is often due to overly high expectations or a change in the desired outcome after surgery.
"There are many psychological factors that prevent a person from accepting their new nose. The operation may be performed flawlessly, but the person looks in the mirror and says that their new nose does not suit them. This is a very big psychological problem. Incidentally, abroad, patient dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result is considered a complication after plastic surgery," says leading Ukrainian plastic surgeon Dmytro Slosser on this subject.
2. Anatomical limitations.
Each nose has a unique structure and skin properties. Some features, such as thick skin or scarring, can limit the surgeon's options and affect the final result. Sometimes this leads to the need for repeat corrections.
"I recently had a patient who had a very large nose with a hump and very thick skin. However, she wanted a small nose. I warned her that we might not achieve the desired result in one go, as the skin would not have time to shrink. Therefore, we have already scheduled a second operation," emphasizes Dmitry Sloser.
3. Various complications after the first operation.
Unfortunately, in some cases, scarring, asymmetry, deformation of the nasal septum, or nasal breathing disorders may occur after the initial rhinoplasty. These problems often arise as a result of unqualified medical intervention, sometimes due to the patient's own fault if they did not follow all the doctor's recommendations. In such cases, a repeat operation helps to correct aesthetic and functional problems.
4. Changes over time.
Over the years, the shape of the nose may change under the influence of the body's natural aging processes, which often forces the patient to turn to a plastic surgeon for revision rhinoplasty to maintain an attractive appearance.
Challenges for the plastic surgeon during revision rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is usually a more expensive and complex operation than the initial one, as the patient may have problems with the functionality of the nose, the presence of scar tissue, etc. Such cases are considered reconstructive surgery and require the plastic surgeon to have extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of modern techniques for performing such procedures. However, with the necessary qualifications, the doctor can successfully solve both aesthetic and functional problems of the patient, even in complex cases.
