Did you know that protruding ears are noticeable at birth?

This problem is often hereditary. It is possible to change the shape of a baby's ears immediately after birth without surgery. If the ears are fixed, they can take the desired shape or change position. Once the child reaches 6 months of age, it will no longer be possible to perform the correction without surgery.

At what age can otoplasty be performed? After 6-7 years, when the ear is fully formed. But only with the child's consent. In my opinion, the best time for otoplasty is before school. Firstly, rehabilitation is faster at this age, and by correcting nature's “mistake,” you will protect your child from ridicule by their peers and, accordingly, psychological problems.

Ear plastic surgery allows you to change the shape and position of the cartilage that makes the ear stick out. The operation lasts about 40 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. To change the shape of the cartilage, I make an incision on the back of the ear, excise part of the cartilage, secure the reconstructed area with special internal sutures, and apply a cosmetic suture to the incision.

After the operation, the ear is fixed with a bandage. It must be worn for several weeks. The stitches are removed after 8-10 days, after which the bandage is worn only at night to avoid damaging the ear during sleep.

The patient can return to their normal lifestyle after otoplasty within 3 days.

FAQ

Is ear plastic surgery an operation?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct the shape or size of the ears in people with congenital or traumatic defects.
How is the otoplasty procedure performed?
Otoplasty is usually performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient's age and preferences. The surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear and correct the shape or size of the ear by adjusting the cartilage and skin. After the operation, a sterile bandage is used to fix the ear in place for a while to help it take on a new position in relation to the head.
How long does recovery take after otoplasty?
Recovery from otoplasty can take several weeks. On the first day after surgery, you may experience pain and discomfort, which can be controlled with medication. The bandage is kept on for several days to a week, depending on your doctor's advice. It may take longer to return to full activity, usually up to 2-3 weeks.
What are the possible complications after otoplasty?
Although complications after otoplasty are rare, some possible complications include infection, bleeding, delayed wound healing, minor changes in ear skin sensitivity, or unsatisfactory cosmetic results. It is important to follow all of your doctor's instructions and report any unusual symptoms after surgery.
What restrictions are there after otoplasty?
After otoplasty, it is important to avoid any activities that may excessively stretch the skin of the ear, such as sleeping on the side of the ear for several weeks. It is also recommended to avoid physical activities that may cause injury to the ear during the recovery period.
What are the expected results of otoplasty?
Expected results from otoplasty usually include improvement in the shape and symmetry of the ear. Although results may vary depending on the initial condition of the ear and individual factors for each person, most patients are satisfied with the results of the procedure.
What alternatives to otoplasty are available for ear correction?
In addition to surgical otoplasty, there are other methods of ear correction, such as the use of devices that help to shape the ear, or the use of special cosmetic products to mask ear defects.
Are there any risks of ear deformity recurrence after otoplasty?
There is a small chance of ear deformity recurring after otoplasty, especially if the patient does not follow the doctor's recommendations and restrictions during the recovery period. However, in some cases, additional corrective surgery may be necessary.
Is otoplasty a painless procedure?
Otoplasty is usually performed under local or general anaesthesia, so the patient should not feel any pain during the procedure. However, there may be some discomfort or mild pain after the operation, which can be controlled with pain medication.

Why Ukrainians turn to plastic surgeons – a survey of Dmytro Slosser's audience

Last week, I conducted a brief survey among my followers on Instagram using the Stories feature. Each question received a different number of responses, but on average, approximately 400 respondents participated. The purpose of this survey was quite simple: to understand what motivates people to undergo cosmetic surgery today. The results confirmed my own observations.
