Preparing for Surgery: 7 Key Factors That Influence the Results

As a plastic surgeon with many years of experience, I am convinced that the success of any surgery largely depends on thorough preparation. Proper preparation helps reduce risks, shorten the recovery period, and achieve the exact result you are aiming for. Here are seven key aspects to focus on.

1. Comprehensive medical examination
Before any surgical procedure, it is essential to undergo laboratory tests and instrumental diagnostics to ensure your body is ready for such a significant challenge.
Typically, patients need to complete:

  • Complete blood count and biochemical blood test

  • Coagulogram

  • Tests for infections

  • ECG

If necessary, consultations with specialized physicians are recommended, as the absence of hidden health issues is crucial for safe anesthesia and a stable postoperative period.

2. Eliminating harmful habits
Smoking and alcohol significantly affect blood circulation and tissue regeneration. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, impairing healing, while alcohol increases the risk of bleeding. I recommend avoiding both for at least 2–4 weeks before surgery and for the same period after.

3. Weight optimization
Ideally, your body mass index should be close to normal. Excess weight can complicate surgery, usually prolongs recovery, and may impact the aesthetic outcome. If you are planning liposuction or abdominoplasty, maintaining a stable weight over the past few months is one of the most important factors for a successful procedure.

4. Medications and supplements
Certain medications and dietary supplements can increase the risk of bleeding or affect blood clotting. Inform your plastic surgeon about everything you take, including herbal remedies and vitamins. Often, 1–2 weeks before surgery, your doctor will advise discontinuing aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and other agents.

5. Psychological readiness
Surgery is not only a physical but also an emotional challenge. It is important to be prepared for significant changes in appearance, temporary discomfort, the need for prescribed medications, procedures, and restrictions during recovery. A detailed conversation with your plastic surgeon about your expectations will help avoid disappointment and form a realistic view of the outcome.

6. Planning for recovery at home
Arrange for a family member or friend to meet you after discharge. Prepare comfortable clothing, nutritious soft-textured foods, medications, and necessary medical supplies in advance. Most likely, you will need special compression garments, so purchase them before surgery to avoid unnecessary stress during rehabilitation.

7. Following preoperative instructions
Before surgery, your plastic surgeon will provide personalized guidelines - from dietary recommendations the day before to specific hygiene measures on the day of the procedure. Following all instructions, even those that seem minor, directly affects the safety of the surgery and the speed of recovery.

I often tell my patients: proper preparation for surgery is already half of the success. Each of these seven steps is a valuable investment in your health and in achieving a successful surgical outcome.
