The nose plays a key role in forming the first impression of a person’s face. It can enhance facial features or, conversely, disrupt overall harmony. The goal of a modern plastic surgeon is not to create a “doll-like” or standardized nose, but one that is harmonious for each individual patient.

The importance of addressing functional breathing issues

Patients often come to a plastic surgeon not only for aesthetic concerns. In many cases, the desire to change the shape of the nose is associated with breathing problems and reduced quality of life. The most common cause is a deviated nasal septum, which restricts normal airflow and may lead to issues such as:

  • nosebleeds,
  • frequent sinus infections,
  • chronic rhinitis,
  • nasal congestion,
  • noring and more.

In such cases, restoring nasal function is the primary goal. This is achieved through septoplasty, a procedure that corrects the deviated septum and improves breathing. At the same time, aesthetic considerations should not be overlooked, as in most cases it is advisable to combine functional and aesthetic correction.

This combined procedure is called septorhinoplasty. It allows simultaneous correction of the septum and reshaping of the nose. This approach is more convenient for the patient, as it involves a single surgery instead of two, with one anesthesia and one recovery period.

Septorhinoplasty has been successfully performed worldwide for many years, delivering both excellent functional and aesthetic results. It is widely considered the modern standard and is supported by leading professional associations of plastic surgeons.

The importance of an individual approach

I would like to emphasize the importance of an individualized approach in every case. High-quality modern rhinoplasty should not be noticeable or standardized. The new nose should look natural. That is why we always evaluate the entire face rather than focusing solely on the nose.

During the preoperative consultation, I pay attention to:

  • facial proportions and profile;
  • skin thickness and cartilage structure;
  • individual anatomical features;
  • patient expectations.

There are also several important recommendations I give every patient before surgery. It is important not to rely on “someone else’s nose” from social media or celebrities, as these do not take your anatomy into account. A plastic surgeon should explain not only “how it will look,” but also “how it will function.” Patients should be prepared for gradual results rather than instant changes like Instagram filters. It is also essential to clearly discuss expectations during the consultation.

Recovery process

After surgery, it is important to allow time for healing. Breathing usually improves relatively quickly, but the final shape of the nose develops gradually. On average, this takes several months up to a year. Initial changes are noticeable within a few weeks, while most swelling subsides over a few months. The final result is typically evaluated at around 6–12 months.

In summary, a successful rhinoplasty result is one that looks natural. You breathe freely, your facial features become more harmonious, and your individuality is preserved. This is the approach I consider correct in modern rhinoplasty.
